Jewish poker game launched in the States

Jews around the world with have one more reason to celebrate this Hanukkah, thanks to the release of a special holiday gift idea dubbed the No Limit Texas Dreidel.

Incorporating a traditional Jewish dreidel - a four-sided spinning device used in the same way as a dice - into the poker classic Texas Hold'em, the new game is already attracting attention having been included in one of the celebrity gift lounges at the American Music Awards (AMA).

Co-inventor Jennie Rivlin Roberts said it could be the first time a Hanukkah item has been included in such a major celebrity event and she attached no significance to the fact that the majority of AMA winners are not actually Jewish.

Indeed one respected religious authority in Jerusalem, Rabbi Joseph Bloch, actually went so far as to welcome the profile-raising stunt, saying that it would encourage people to discover foreign cultures.

"The non-Jewish celebrities will enjoy being included," he predicted. "Hopefully, it will inspire people to learn a bit more about each other and themselves."

No Limit Texas Dreidel uses poker betting rules but the stakes are chocolate coins rather than poker chips.
