Magic Fish Description

If there is a little scientist in your life, or someone who is fascinated by aquatics, then these Magic Fish are sure to get their attention. That’s right, these fish are magic!

Magic FishYou will receive a science kit that will amaze. The process of hatching your own fish is simple. You will receive what will look like a tea bag and all you have to do is place it in water and within 12-24 hours you have your own fish – just like magic! It doesn’t stop there though; you can keep the fish bag and repeat the hatching process several times as each Magic Fish teabag contains as many as 20 eggs.

The fish that are commonly hatched are called Killifish or Red-Golden Dragon fish a type of rare and high-grade ornamental fish originating from several places from around the world.

It is a perfect gift for anyone who loves animals and it is truly amazing to hatch and watch your own beautiful magic fish develop.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How big do my Magic Fish get? Magic Fish range in size from 2-2.5 inches
  • How many Magic Fish will hatch out? You normally get 6 to 8 Magic Fish but don't be surprised if you get as many as 20.
  • After I hatch out my first batch of Magic Fish is the teabag done? No, if you put it back in Ziploc bag you can try to hatch out more in about 2 weeks.
  • What do I feed my Magic Fish? The first food should be the baby brine shrimp (Sea Monkey) which you hatch from the food box. When your Magic Fish get larger (about 1/2 inch) you can start feeding them more variety. Tropical fish flake foods or frozen fish foods like brine shrimp, glass worms and bloodworm.
  • Where are my Magic Fish originally from? Magic fish are a family of fish know as Killifish. They are found in several countries. The Magic Fish you have are found on the continent of Africa. In nature they are found in freshwater temporary pools, brooks and swamps.
  • How long do my Magic Fish live? Magic Fish are considered annuals but if the are well taken care of they can live 2 years or more.
  • Can my Magic Fish be kept in a fish tank with other fish? Yes, when your Magic Fish is large enough they can be kept with other tropical freshwater fish. Check with your local fish store for compatibility.
  • How big of a bowl or tank do I need for my Magic Fish? Depending on how many Magic Fish you are keeping together and how often you want to change some water, you can go as small as a 1 gallon bowl up to a regular fish tank with filter. In a bowl with no filtration you should change a quarter of the water each day so that you don't get a build up of waste.
  • I'm having trouble with my brine shrimp (sea monkeys) hatching is there anything I can do to get more to hatch? Try changing the temperature. Shine a light on them for 12 hours a day. Change salinity (add more salt or less). Don't try to hatch too many eggs. With brine shrimp (sea monkeys) little is better than more. If you like to make a brine shrimp hatchery, go to education section.
  • Can I breed my Magic Fish? Yes, you should be able to breed your Magic Fish if you take some time and have patience. Look on our Educational page for information on how it is done.
  • What happens if the weather is cold? This means your eggs will be in a dormant state, keep the tea bag in the airing cupboard for 2-3 weeks before using them to wake them up.
  • How big are the fish when they hatch? They are really tiny so you need to wait a few days until you will be able to see them swimming.

Bought these as a present, we've tried them 3 times now, following the instructions exactly and no fish :(
Prezzybox says: Hi Sarah! :-) It sometimes happens that when it is very cold the eggs can go into a further dormant state and need "conditioning" at room temperature for 7 - 14 days. This means just keeping them in a warm room at home before attempting to hatch them. Also it’s worth noting - When the fish do hatch they are really tiny when they first appear and can sometimes be missed! Hope this helps Sarah, and please do get back in touch if you are still experiencing problems :-)
Louise Manson on 07 January 2012

Hi, I just wanted to know if the fish only eat live food, cos thats what sum1 sed. will you not be able to give them normal fish flakes? Thanks
Prezzybox says: Hello Kay, Thank you for your message, Magic Fish prefer live food but when they get bigger than about an inch long you can try and gradually change them onto fish flakes. I hope this helps!

I have had the same problem as Si (02/1/11) with this product, I had received it as a xmas pressie and followed the instructions carefully, I have even kept the product warm but still havnt seen any sign of life, an ingenious idea but only if it could work! maybe the magic is insivible fish? sadly a big dissappointment
Prezzybox says: Hello Aaron, I am very sorry to hear about the problems with your Magic Fish. Please contact our Customer Services team on 0844 2495 007 or via email and they will be happy to help you.
Si on 02 January 2011
I am some what sceptical of products such as this, but after reading the reviews on here, decided to go ahead and purchase magic fish as a stocking filler for my Son. Well, we set everything up, as instucted, all followed to the letter...........and a big fat NOTHING! We were hugely disappointed and kept eagerly checking, with our own magnifying glass.......(don't bother with the one included!) trying to spot an egg or indeed any sign of life. All we have ended up with is a puddle of peat floating around after 2 days, and a let down child :(
Prezzybox says: I am sorry to hear that your Magic Fish eggs haven't hatched! I have spoken with our supplier and as the Magic Fish were dispatched during the bad weather the eggs will have gone into a dormant stage. To "wake them up" you need to put the bag of eggs into your airing cupboard or a warm place for 1-2 weeks. If you need anymore help please contact us.

I have kept tropical fish for several years and paid any thing. from four to five pounds per fish! I was looking for seamonkey for my young sons and spotted thid, brilliant idea I get my new fish without leaving the house and get all the pleasure of watchig my tank from egg to fish, wouthout the bumpy bus rifes, fish inplasic bagd getting shaken anout and you get the pleasure of at least 20 from hatch to full size fish and at 18months of fun without the huge cost of tropical fish and garden centres! Brilliant fun and none of the hassles, wins for me everytimes, 5/5 for fun 5.5 cost and 5/5 for ease and 5/5 for prezzybox genious! Brilliant }ift suiable fo all families

Tom on 28 November 2010
Can't wait to get started!
jane on 15 October 2010
wow they are so cool.
Phillip on 12 October 2010
I first purchased these lovely fish back in late august, the instructions are easy to follow. To hatch the fish, aged tap water is needed. Leave the water roughly 24hrs then the fun begins! Place the bag in the water and wait! After a few hours you could have some baby fish :-) At first I only managed to hatch two fish they are now 6 weeks old and doing great! I contacted prezziebox to explain that i had trouble to hatch anymore and they contacted their supplier and I was sent out another set of eggs, and all I can is WOW 12 fish hatched out on the first attempt!!!! Excellent friendly customer service from prezziebox! I would recommend them and of course the fish to all!
Jusna Begum on 05 October 2010
This is a really interesting gift for anyone. I managed to hatch 6 but 4 of them have died. Does anyone know how often to feed them?
Sarah on 19 September 2010
wish to buy 'magic fish' but its not in stock im so gutted, as my friend bought them from here and told me about it, i was excited to start my own, she has 5 fish and they are amazing! going to buy 2 sets of these hopefully soon they'll be in stock again.
mummyov2 on 08 June 2010
i have also been waiting for this product to come in to stock as it sounds cool and want to buy my brother and sister one for the birthday, when will they be in stock ? x
kiki on 28 May 2010
I thought they would never be available in stock when you wish to purchase, i was a happy customer, my son has had 2 lots of science lots from prezziebox and enjoys them very much. Except you cant buy food on here you have to pay extra for another amount of money and you cant buy extra eggs on here either, my first thought was what a waste of money as they didnt wrk the first time. The second time however they worked so well the Aquasaurs, that i ordered the Triops also and their first batch also caved in, but the second batch are now thriving. We are now waiting to order for the first time the Magic Fish, there are none available at this time although we have been visiting the site often there have been none available for awhile. Although they will probably not work the first time either, but just keep trying and all will be well.

Frequently asked questions...

  • I'd love to buy these in advance for little presents to give away from time to time. How long will they 'keep', so that I can judge how long in advance of giving them I can order some packs to store away for future giving?
    • The Magic Fish do not have an expiration date as such. Our suppliers of this item offer the following advice regarding this product:
When it is very cold the eggs will be in an even more dormant state – especially if they have been housed in a cold warehouse or freezing delivery van on their journey to you. The cold weather will generally not harm them but makes them a little more reluctant to make their first appearance.
We recommend that you put the eggs in a warm place – perhaps an airing cupboard or near a towel rail or radiator (not actually on it!). It may help to keep them in this warm environment for up to two weeks before re-attempting to hatch or starting for the first time.
  • Do you need special equipment, food and do you need to clean the fish tank as you would normal fish?
    • Everything you need initially comes with the kit. As the fish grow - you can use a small glass then larger glass
then goldfish bowl or aquarium to house them.
You feed the fish live brine shrimp (sometimes known as sea monkeys). The kit includes enough brine shrimp eggs to hatch and keep fish fed for months. You can then buy more from most pet or aquatic suppliers.
Full instructions are included regarding caring for your magic fish and keeping their environment clean.
